Quick Start — Unbox & Initialize
Follow these core steps to get your Ledger hardware wallet ready. Always use official Ledger software and only purchase devices from authorized sellers.
Step-by-step
- Unbox. Verify tamper-evident packaging, check included USB cable, recovery sheet & documentation.
- Power on & choose a PIN. Connect the device and create a secure PIN you will remember.
- Write down your Recovery Phrase. The device will display your 24-word recovery phrase — write it on the supplied recovery sheet offline. Never store digitally.
- Install Ledger Live. Download Ledger Live from ledger.com only. Use it to install crypto apps and manage accounts.
- Install apps & add accounts. Use Ledger Live to download only the apps you need (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
- Confirm addresses for transactions. Always verify the receiving address on the device screen before sending funds.
Security Best Practices
Your recovery phrase is the single most important secret protecting your funds. Never share it, never type it into a website, and never photograph it. Use the device's built-in PIN and set up a passphrase if you require extra account separation. For large holdings, consider multi-sig strategies and offline vault practices.
Common Troubleshooting
If your device does not power on, try another USB cable or port. For Ledger Live errors, update the app to the latest version and ensure the Ledger device firmware is current. If you lose your device, you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger using your 24-word recovery phrase — proceed carefully.
Supported Devices & Compatibility
Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X and later models are supported. Ledger works with Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Use Ledger Live for desktop or mobile management and official browser extensions only when instructed by Ledger Live.
